Dash of Color and Spice

Blackberry Bourbon Smash

June 4, 2021

Blackberry Bourbon smash on coaster with lime and blackberry garnish

This Blackberry Bourbon Smash is the perfect drink for this summer. The muddled blackberries give this drink the perfect beautiful pink/purple color. There’s a little lime juice and mint muddled in as well for a slight tang and fresh flavor. The beauty of it is that you can control how sweet you want it a couple of different ways. Add in your favorite sweetener, whether that’s simple syrup, agave, or others, and use the drink topper of choice. What do I mean by drink topper?? After all the ingredients are muddled and shaken to incorporate all the flavors, it gets poured into a glass and topped with club soda, tonic water, ginger beer, or sparkling water. See? So incredibly versatile but always thirst quenching and delicious!

Arroz con Leche

January 15, 2021

White mugs with red rims filled with arroz con leche. Garnished with a cinnamon stick.

Arroz con leche is one of the most comforting and delicious foods, (or drink), I grew up with. It translates to rice with milk and that is exactly what it is. Think of it as a Mexican rice pudding that is very simple but so satisfying. Growing up, my mom would make this arroz con leche in a way that would make it easy for us to drink and eat the rice. Just like many other dishes in Mexican cuisine, arroz con leche can be very different depending on where your family is from. Also, arroz con leche is not just Mexican but there are various other Latin countries that enjoy their own versions of it as well.

Apple cider margarita with apple slice and cinnamon stick garnish. Apple on side

Apple cider is one of those things that automatically make you think of the holidays. It reminds me of going to an orchard and sipping on some hot apple cider while enjoying a delicious apple cider donut. Who doesn’t like an apple cider donut?! My favorite kind of apple cider is the spiced kind. There’s something so welcoming and satisfying about the warmness that comes from the cinnamon and spices.

Champurrado

February 19, 2020

Ever had champurrado before? Have you even heard of it? Regardless of the champurrado status in your life, you need to try this. So cozy and comforting, this Mexican chocolate drink is out of this world.

Do you have that one drink that brings back memories? Something that, after the first sip, takes you back to something specific? This champurrado will always take me back to my grandma’s house on a Sunday. On a cold day my abuelita would make this delicious and cozy drink to enjoy after a delicious homemade meal. It also brings me back to my trips to Mexico and buying champurrado from a lady selling it on the street. Sounds sketchy, I know. However, that will always be some of the best champurrado I have ever had.

Jamaica (Hibiscus) and Ginger Margaritas

January 20, 2020

These margaritas have a slight tartness from the hibiscus tea and hint of sweetness from the ginger simple syrup. Perfect for a hot summer day or any day of the year when a Margarita is warranted. So pretty much always!

After a long week of work, or just because, there’s nothing like a delicious and satisfying margarita. The tequila with the tartness of the hibiscus tea, (Agua de Jamaica), is the best combo. What makes it perfect? The ginger simple syrup! You definitely don’t want to skip this step. You can use the simple syrup for various other drinks but it absolutely pairs great with the hibiscus.

Refreshing and incredible easy, this hibiscus flower tea is perfect for a hot summer day or just to quench your thirst any day of the year! Perfect to wash down some yummy tacos too 😉

If you’ve ever been to Mexico you probably have experienced, or at least seen, the street vendors selling aguas frescas from their carts. Typically they can be seen with a cart full of vitroleros, a very large container, with all kinds of different aguas frescas: lime, horchata, cantaloupe, and jamaica just to name a few. They are all so good, refreshing, and easy to make yourself!
